DYKE DRESS & EXPRESSING SOLIDARITY

"When solidarity activism is placed directly onto the lesbian body, it is personal".

In Flags and fashion: expressions of solidarity through lesbian clothing by Eleanor Medhurst (2023), Medhurst demonstrates how clothing has been used by lesbians to show solidarity with other movements within the LGBTQ+ community. With a focus on printed shirts and wearing pride colours, Medhurst proposes a form of 'flagging' to signal intra-community solidarity (Medhurst 2023).

"My ‘Not Proud to be British’ dress is a culmination of my belief in the power of political dress to make a statement. I wanted to very visibly show my anger, frustration, and disgust at the UK government and also the state of the world, at the things we have all let slide for too long"

AMY FROM AIMLESS GALLERY

"Whether its a t-shirt, or a sweet jar, a phone case or embroidered patches: creating artwork for a collaborative piece and turning it into something that’s visible and loudly proud, is something I feel is beautifully transformative".
